Artist Statement - Ashe Wise

 

I am a semi-realism and cartoon illustrator. My goal for my series is to illustrate emotions such as despair and depression with vibrant colors instead of using darker, muted tones to get my meaning across. In a way, that reflects how I am as a person, someone who’s going through internal conflict, but no one ever sees past the bright-colored mask I wear. 

 

I prefer to work in digital art but when I’m working with traditional art my go-to is always simple—watercolor, color pencils, and alcohol markers (even crayons as well in some cases). Painting isn’t too far out of my skill level, but I prefer to keep things simple.

 

I feel like I should point out that my theme isn’t just Expressionism, but focuses more on the aftermath of what happens when you suppress your true self, or otherwise—The lack of Expression, Hiding yourself. 

 

Art makes me feel free, even if it’s momentary. It frees me from the limitations of words and speech. Quite honestly, it makes me feel empowered that I can draw anything in the world without a reference if I wanted. Artists can create the illusion of space, an entire world just on a single sheet of paper within moments.

 

At the end of the day—it’s the process that I come to appreciate more than the piece itself.
